Know the new law. H.3594
On 03-07-2024, Governer McMaster signed into law, Constitution Carry, becoming the 29th state to do so. This new law has a lot of business and residents worried and concerned. With crime growing to both personal and business alike, it is your responsibility to keep yourself informed and up to date with the laws.
The new law gives Palmetto State residents the right to carry firearms in most public areas, creating what some advocates call a form of “constitutional carry”. While it has been legal to open carry a pistol/handgun in South Carolina since 2021, the right was limited only to residents with a concealed weapons permit. The person had to be at least 21-years-old and had to undergo 8hrs of training and successfully pass a background check. Now, none of that is required.
Let us at Island Security help inform you on what has changed.
Here is what changed:
- 18yo can now legally open or conceal carry a pistol and apply for a CWP even though a CWP license is no longer needed.
- Firearms are prohibited in areas that have the appropriate signage.
- There are no restrictions of where a gun can be stored in your vehicle or how it will be stored.
- A person concealing their firearm does not have to tell law enforcement that they have a weapon, and police cannot use the fact that a person is carrying a firearm to stop and question that person.
- People can carry their weapon into a bar legally as long as they are not consuming alcohol.
